DAR partnered with the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) in 1996 to sponsor an annual national essay contest in honor of Christopher Columbus. The contest is open to students in grades nine through twelve.

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

No application is required. Contest is open to students worldwide, except where void or prohibited by law. Essays must be written in English only. Entrant must be in the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade at the time of the current contest deadline.The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities.Guidelines for writing the essay are: 1. The essay must be written in the presence of a faculty or DAR member within a two-hour time limit. 2. Please place the title of the essay and the focus question at the top of the first page. 3. The student’s name and a page number must be placed in the upper right-hand corner of each page of the essay. 4.


Essay Contest Rules 2020. Length: Your essay should be at least 1,000 words but should not exceed 1,250 words (word count does not apply to the list of sources). The word count must be included on the document you submit. Content and Judging: Submissions will be judged on the quality of analysis, quality of research, and form, style and mechanics.The National Columbus Celebration Association Essay Contest Each year, an essay contest is co-sponsored by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) on a topic related to Christopher Columbus, for high school students throughout the United States.

One essay is selected as chapter winner and forwarded to the state American History chair for the state competition. Certificates may be presented by sponsoring chapter, if desired. A Christopher Columbus Essay Certificate is available from The DAR Store.

Essay Certificate is available from The DAR Store. STATE: One essay is selected as the state winner and forwarded to the division vice chair of American History for division competition. The state winner receives a state winner certificate.
